The future of smartphones unfolds… with a hefty price tag

Home Business Management The future of smartphones unfolds… with a hefty price tag

SAMSUNG has launched the second generation of its shape-shifting Galaxy Z Fold smartphone-tablet hybrid.

Although the Z Fold 2 includes some significant upgrades to its innovative, but teething trouble-plagued predecessor, it comes with a steep price tag of R49 999. Monthly contracts start at R2799.

Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa, doesn’t believe this will deter well-heeled tech lovers. Speaking at the local launch, held virtually on Tuesday 1 September, he said that while stocks of the first-generation Z Fold had been limited, the company was well prepared this time round to meet what he predicted would be strong local demand for the new version.

“Our journey towards the next generation of mobile devices is full of originality and innovation,” he said. “With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2, we closely listened to user feedback to ensure we were bringing meaningful improvements to the hardware, while also developing new innovations to enhance the user experience.”

One of the more noticeable upgrades is to the front display which now features a significantly bigger 6.2-inch screen, allowing owners to use the device like a more traditional smartphone when in the closed position. The exterior is also encased in the latest version of impact resistant Gorilla Glass.

When unfolded, the device transforms into 7.6-inch tablet format. The Samsung-branded Ultra-Thin Glass on the Z Fold 2 promises not only to be more resilient than the original, but should deliver a more premium, less plasticy feel.

Other improvements include a slimmer body and smaller gap between screens when the phone is closed. The device also boasts a significantly better hinge system that Samsung says is more durable and better at keeping out dust and other potential damaging matter. It can also lock into more positions than the previous version, giving the owner more ways to use the device.

It’s also well-endowed with cameras – a triple-lens main camera cluster on the rear, a cover camera and a front-facing camera on the folding screen. It comes with a 4500mAh battery,, 256GB of storage, 12GB of RAM and a fingerprint sensor on the side.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be available in Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black colour options. It will be available for pre-order from 7 September and in stores from 25 September. – GeekWire.co.za
