NELSON Mandela University has been elected as the 14th member of the global research network Photovoltaic Collaborative to Advance Multi-climate Performance and Energy Research (PV CAMPER).
As the world accelerates its transition to renewable energy, the university’s growing international collaborations continue to create meaningful opportunities for research leadership, postgraduate development and solutions-driven science.
The appointment to the network marks a significant milestone for the University’s expanding international presence in photovoltaic (PV) science and renewable energy innovation.
The network is led by Sandia National Laboratories in the United States.
It reinforces the institution’s commitment to sustainability-focused research that responds to local and global energy challenges. This is in line with the University’s focus on research, innovation and internationalisation and sustainability, as per Vision 2030.
Professor Ernest van Dyk, from the University’s Photovoltaics Research Group based in the Department of Physics, is the University’s appointed representative to PV CAMPER.
Prof Van Dyk says the appointment recognises years of sustained research excellence and international collaboration.

The collaboration is expected to enhance the University’s global research visibility while creating valuable opportunities for postgraduate students and early-career researchers to participate in world-class solar energy research.
PV CAMPER brings together leading research institutions and outdoor field laboratories across six continents and most major climate zones. The collaborative focuses on improving photovoltaic efficiency, system reliability, predictive modelling and the cross-climate validation of emerging solar technologies.
Nelson Mandela University’s inclusion reflects the strength of its research capabilities and its long-standing contribution to the photovoltaic sector in South Africa and internationally.
The Photovoltaics Research Group’s work spans the full PV value chain, including advanced materials characterisation, outdoor performance analysis, reliability studies, simulation, testing and system optimisation.
The group contributes to postgraduate education, human capital development and industry collaboration, helping to grow high-level renewable energy skills in South Africa.
This latest international appointment is expected to unlock new opportunities for collaborative field studies, shared global datasets, advanced modelling research, workshops and student exchanges.

A key strength within this ecosystem is the University’s close relationship with PVinsight, its spin-off company specialising in accredited testing and on-site evaluation of photovoltaic modules operating in solar plants.
