Home Infrastructure Construction & Civils Coega manages the successful construction of Matatiele TB hospital

TO help enhance the quality of life for South Africans, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), working with the Eastern Cape Department of Health (ECDoH), on August 17, achieved a significant milestone and made a notable impact as a trusted infrastructure implementing agent of choice, by launching yet another example of world-class infrastructure, the Khotsong Tuberculosis (TB) Hospital in Matatiele, in the Eastern Cape.

According to the MEC for Health, Nomakhosazana Meth, the rollout of the construction of healthcare facilities is steadily improving in the Eastern Cape. The much-needed Khotsong TB Hospital is a source of pride for the province in line with meeting the service delivery demands of local communities.

Coega’s project manager for the Department of Health Programme, Sipho Kuhlase, outlined that, “Coega has made a substantial contribution to enhancing the wellbeing of South Africans through its commitment to infrastructure development. As a preferred implementing agent of choice, Coega has achieved yet another significant milestone in the delivery of world-class healthcare facilities. The development and inauguration of the Khotsong TB Hospital will play an essential role in the long-term treatment of air-borne infectious diseases.”

Infrastructure development is a critical component of socio-economic progress that directly impacts the quality of life of citizens, particularly those within the immediate project environment. Access to quality healthcare facilities is particularly essential to ensuring the wellbeing of communities. Coega has supported the Eastern Cape Department of Health in its endeavours to prioritise the development of quality healthcare infrastructure across South Africa.

The Khotsong TB Hospital serves as a prominent illustration of Coega’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure. Constructed for the Eastern Cape DoH, the facility will serve as a specialised centre for the diagnosis, treatment, and care of TB patients. The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities, ensuring the delivery of comprehensive and effective healthcare services to the local population.

The hospital created employment opportunities in the region. The construction phase of the facility has already provided temporary employment to local workers, stimulating the local economy. Additionally, the hospital’s operational phase has created sustainable job opportunities for healthcare professionals, administrators, and support staff.

Further, the hospital serves as a beacon of enhanced healthcare infrastructure, luring skilled medical professionals and improving the overall standard of care. Its presence has also promoted medical research and innovation, leading to advancements in TB treatment and management strategies.

Coega’s success as a trusted infrastructure implementing agent stems from its adherence to best practices, transparency, and accountability. The organisation follows a rigorous project management approach, ensuring that infrastructure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Through its effective project management, Coega has consistently earned the trust of government entities and stakeholders, making it the agent of choice for infrastructure development projects.
