THE Allan Gray Makers StartUp Academy is seeking ambitious South Africans with a passion for entrepreneurship in the plumbing and electrical trades. Applications for the prestigious programme’s 2025 cohort opened on 1 November 2024, and will close on 31 January 2025.
The programme provides a unique opportunity for qualified artisans who are looking to boost their early-stage business or those about to start a business.

The StartUp Academy is dedicated to nurturing entrepreneurial talent, and providing aspiring business owners with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to succeed in their ventures.

“We believe that entrepreneurship is a powerful driver of economic growth and job creation,” says Palesa Mofokeng, recruitment and selection manager at Allan Gray Makers. “The StartUp Academy offers a unique opportunity for skilled tradespeople to transition their expertise into successful businesses, contributing to their communities and the broader South African economy,” she adds. “At Allan Gray Makers we like to say, ‘your skill is your business idea.’”

The StartUp Academy provides participants with:
  • Comprehensive training in entrepreneurial, industry, technical, business, and market readiness
  • Access to a network of successful entrepreneurs and industry experts
  • Ongoing mentorship and support throughout the programme
  • Lifelong support through the association upon successful completion
To apply, applicants must fulfil the following criteria:
  • Age: 18-35. Must be a South African citizen or hold a permanent residence status.
  • Location: Gauteng, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo (classes will be held in Johannesburg, Gqeberha, Durban, Secunda, and Capricorn)
  • Intentions: Desire to start their own business.
  • Artisans with a trade test, OR, 3 years work experience and qualify to take a trade test, OR N2 TVET qualification and 3 years work experience in the relevant trades (Plumbing and Electrical).
