Bizana hospital upgrade an investment in healthcare and economic development

IN what promises to be a boost for both healthcare and economic development in the region, the Greenville Hospital in Bizana is being reconstructed at a cost of R400 million.

Launched by the Eastern Cape Department of Health, this multi-phased project is part of the province’s R3 billion five-year infrastructure investment plan, as announced by Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane.

The first phase, valued at R184 million, was officially handed over by Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa – marking what is being called a critical step in delivering quality healthcare services to rural communities in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality.

Beyond the bricks and mortar, this initiative is driving significant job creation for the local community. As construction ramps up, it is creating opportunities for local contractors, artisans, suppliers, and skilled labour – supporting businesses and stimulating the regional economy.

The upgraded Greenville Hospital will deliver a comprehensive suite of services, including emergency care, maternal health, and chronic disease management. The modernised facility will include a state-of-the-art core block, updated wards, paediatric and infectious disease units, staff accommodation, and the removal of ageing infrastructure to meet contemporary healthcare standards.

The Eastern Cape government said the project underscores its commitment to building resilient public infrastructure that not only restores dignity in service delivery but also empowers communities economically. “This is more than a hospital upgrade – it’s an investment in people, jobs, and public health equity,” the provincial government said.
