Hive green ammonia project picks Danish hydrogen electrolyser partner

HIVE Hydrogen SA’s green ammonia project at Coega has selected Danish company Topsoe to supply electrolyser cell technology and other equipment in ‌a deal valued at around USD1 billion, according to a Reuters report.

The hydrogen electrolyser is the largest component of the plant, and the company previously said a pre-FEED (Front End Engineering Design) for it had been completed in March 2024.

Reuters quotes Giles Redpath, chief executive officer of Hive Energy, saying in a media statement that Topsoe’s green ammonia technology would allow the company to cut renewable energy capital expenditure by more than USD 582.20 million.

The R105 billion green ammonia project is one of the largest ever inward investments into South Africa and aims to establish one of the world’s largest green ammonia plants, producing more than 1,000,000 tons per year for export to the Far East and Europe when the first phase comes online in 2029.

In December 2023, Hive Hydrogen SA, a joint venture between UK-based Hive Energy and the South African group, BuiltAfrica, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Itochu Corp of Japan. According to the agreement, the parties will cooperate on advancing the Coega green ammonia project; engage on mutual interests, including Itochu’s potential involvement as a strategic equity investor and as an offtaker of green ammonia and green hydrogen production.

The plant has secured its own dedicated renewable energy power supply of almost 3,000 MW generated by wind and solar energy – representing the largest clusters of PV farms and wind assets under single ownership in Africa.
