SA builds ties with Japan for trade and investment

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa has held bilateral meetings with industry leaders in Japan on the margins of the 9th TICAD Summit held at Yokohama. According to government sources, he is advancing South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 and bilateral economic engagements with the government and industry leaders of Japan with a view to strengthening trade and investment ties between South Africa and Japan.

Ramaphosa held a meeting with the president and chief operating officer of Isuzu Motor Corporation, Shinsuke Minami.  Isuzu Motors South Africa (IMSA) has a manufacturing base in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, which produces the seventh-generation D-MAX after a R1.2 billion plant upgrade that included a new body shop, chassis line, and paint-shop upgrades.

 IMSA is positioned as a supply hub for sub-Saharan Africa – exporting Isuzu D-MAX vehicles to 34 regional markets and shipping Knocked Down (CK) kits to Kenya for local assembly.

President Ramaphosa also held a meeting with the chairperson of the board of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Mitsubishi Power), Seiji Izumisawa.

 Mitsubishi Power Africa services boilers at Medupi and Kusile, and. The company also markets hydrogen-capable turbines and “triple hybrid” off-grid systems across the Southern African Development Community.

 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries partnered with Eskom on earlier NOx reduction retrofit studies,  focusing on gas peaking and industrial cogeneration prospects.
